Dental Implants in Scarborough

For the past few years, dental implants have changed the way patients and dentists consider replacing teeth. They have been providing a foundation for replacing teeth that function, look and feel like a real tooth.

For many years, the options for replacing missing teeth have been dentures or fixed bridges. The main problem with dentures have been lack of stability and presence of a foreign object in the mouth that patients had to get used to. Bridges seemed to be a better option where possible, however the long-term life span of a bridge was questionable and presence of reliable anchoring teeth (abutments) were not always possible.

The most important disadvantage that we faced with these options, however, was the continuous loss of bone during the patient’s lifespan. This usually results in changes in the contours of the face, difficulty with chewing and speech as well as aesthetic problems that would give patients a very aged appearance.

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants are titanium cylinders that replace the root of a missing tooth. Over a period of 4 to 9 months, these fixtures get integrated with the jawbone and will serve as a very strong anchoring element for the prostheses of choice.

There are a number of prosthetic options available for restoration of the missing teeth. This depends on the patients’ oral health needs and also the patients’ own vision. A single prosthesis (crown) may replace a single tooth while for individuals with multiple missing teeth, options of removable or fixed prostheses are available.

Following the examination appointment, a treatment plan will be discussed with the patient based on the information gathered during the exam.  Full treatment sequences along with the end result will be reviewed with the patient, before proceeding with any of the procedures.
